10 Years of Skateboarding, Photography and Yeah Girl
This year I celebrate 10 years as a skateboarder and skate photographer, and Yeah Girl also celebrates 10 years. It feels really special that these two journeys have happened alongside each other.
My journey through skateboarding and photography has given me so much, but it hasn’t always been as glamorous as it might look. It’s been years of showing up, figuring things out as I go, building community, creating opportunities and continuing to push for more representation behind the lens.
Yeah Girl started on the Gold Coast, Australia, ten years ago as a platform celebrating women and gender-diverse people in skateboarding. Over the last decade, it has grown alongside a huge shift in skateboarding. There is more visibility, more opportunities, more people behind the lens and more space for us to tell our own stories.
To celebrate ten years, Sarah Huston from Yeah Girl created Footnote: A Yeah Girl Retrospective, a documentary looking back at that evolution and the people who have been part of it. And somehow, I’m one of them. 🥹
I had the opportunity to share a bit about my own journey as a photographer and community organizer alongside Mimi Knoop, Louisa Menke, Dr Indigo Willing and Yeah Girl founder Sarah Huston.
The documentary talks about where women’s and gender-diverse skateboarding was ten years ago, how much has changed and also how much work there still is to do.
For me, seeing part of my own journey become a little footnote in this much bigger history is really special. Especially because this year I’m also looking back at my own ten years in skateboarding and photography, and thinking about everything that has happened because I decided to pick up a skateboard and a camera.
Footnote: A Yeah Girl Retrospective premiered on October 4th at BLEACH Festival on the Gold Coast, Australia, right where Yeah Girl started ten years ago.
Happy 10 years, Yeah Girl!! Thank you for having me and for letting me be a small part of this history.
Here is the teaser, and stay tuned for more screenings in the future.
