"Unity Through Skateboarding": A Celebration of Community at SFMOMA
As a photographer, there’s something incredibly gratifying about seeing your art presented in a tangible way. If you follow my social media, you might have caught some posts about the exhibition "Unity Through Skateboarding", curated by Jeffrey Cheung and Gabriel Ramirez. This exhibition celebrates the dreams and realities of queer, trans, BIPOC, and women skaters, as well as the vibrant communities that have shaped the movement, despite a history often marked by hypermasculinity and exclusion.
I’m truly honored to be part of this exhibition alongside so many individuals I admire. It showcases historic moments in skateboarding through skate decks, paintings, magazines, and videos, highlighting not only the diversity within the sport but also the pioneers who have broken barriers to redefine skateboarding.
The journey surrounding this exhibit has been incredibly special. During our first visit, Marie de Corcy turned pro at the museum, surrounded by friends and fellow skaters. Just yesterday, we attended the artist reception for the full museum exhibition, "Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture." This exhibition captures the essence of why we love sports, showcasing art, design, and interactive experiences. It’s hard to put into words just how moving it is to see our community celebrated at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, alongside so many legends.
I’m excited to share my contributions to this exhibition, featuring Rosie Archie, Kien Caples, Itzel Granados, Breana Geering, Shari White, Jessyka Bailey, Una Farrar, and Verónica Zamudio, along with group photos showcasing Skate Like a Girl, Ucanskate, and Planche Collective and my Skate Witches and Mess Magazine covers yay!
Without further ado, here are some photos from last night to give you a sneak peek of what’s on display. If you find yourself in San Francisco, be sure to check out the exhibit, running until February 18, 2025. A heartfelt thank you to Jeff and Gabe for creating such a wonderful moment and for including so many of us!
